Since 2000 Templeton Stud has been preparing horses for sale at its historical base in Berkshire, from foals through to yearlings and breeding stock. In the early days, the stud consigned their own stock, before joining forces with a leading consignor for the next 8 years. However in 2008 Templeton resolved to consign again in its own name and this decision led to a staggering outcome: presenting it’s first ever draught of yearlings to the Tattersalls October Sales, Templeton Stud became the joint European yearling sales topper of the year.
The title of joint highest priced yearling went to a Montjeu colt out of Vanishing Prairie, the dam of Group 1 winner Vespone and Purple Moon, 2nd in two Group 1s, the Hong Kong Vase and Melbourne Cup. Templeton consigned the yearling on behalf of Marcel and Sibylle Egloff’s Gestut Sohrenhof in Switzerland, who have been boarding their mares with Caroline Green since 2003. The keenest bidders for the colt were trainers Terry Mills and Tom Tate, with Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock persisting in the final duel, before John Magnier, acting for Coolmore, sealed the bidding at 650,000Gns. The colt is now called September Morn and is in training at Ballydoyle.
In 2009 Templeton expanded its operations to Newmarket, opening Mertoun Paddocks, located within walking distance to Tattersalls. The new yard, enjoying purposely build up-to-date facilities, is ideally suited to take outside horses including mares, foals, yearlings and horses out of training to prepare for all sales destinations, home and abroad. Rob Speers, Stud Groom at Mertoun Paddocks has gained invaluable sales preparation experience at Coolmore and Highclere, before joining the Templeton group.
